8 Ways to Makeover Your Bathroom on A Small Budget

Do you want to give you bathroom a new look without re-tiling, painting or or spending more than $200?

It’s possible even if you rent your bathoom. Bathrooms are the often overlooked room in our home because they have to serve so many functions, but they can still look good.

Inexpensive ways to makeover your bathroom

Maybe you live in an apartment or rent a house and you want to make your bathroom look nice but you can’t paint or tile.  Or maybe you own your own home but you don’t have the budget to do a major renovation.  Whatever the reason, you can make your bathroom look better without spending a lot of money.  Try adding a few of these to your bathroom to get a new look.

Install Floating Shelves

These can be a nice way to add interest to your bathroom if you can’t change anything permanent.  They are not normally meant to hold a lot of heavy things, so hang them only with the intent to hold light things.  It’s a nice way to add storage for things like toilet paper, hand towels or Q-tips.

I ordered two of these floating shelves on Amazon. They come in white and wood.

I use affiliate links so I can afford to keep doing this.  Hope it saves you time. See my disclosure policy.

Use Baskets for Storage

Baskets can be the perfect way to add texture to your bathroom and they are functional.  You can use them to store towels, hold nick knacks or even as a trash can. It’s nice to have baskets that coordinate if you use multiple baskets. This makes it look intentional.

Threshold even makes a basket waste basket with a plastic liner.

Hang Art in Your Bathroom

Sometimes we don’t think of art as something that we need in the bathroom.  Bathrooms are just like every other room.  A small piece of art hung in just the right spot can make your bathroom feel finished and can also tie together the colors in your bathroom. Read this article to figure out the color palette of your bathroom.

It’s best to hang art that is protected behind glass since there is a lot of water in a bathroom.  Something small like these can really complement your bathroom and you can download them.

Hang Window Shades or a curtain

If you are lucky enough to have natural light in your bathroom, you will most likely want something to give you some privacy.  The bathroom is tricky because you may also have to worry about water.

A curtain may need to tolerate wetness.  If you have a window in a shower area there are some nice window decals that can provide privacy without blocking light.  Wayfair has a lot of great choices for window decals like this Highland Dune window decal. You can also get similar window decals on Amazon.

I made an easy DIY bathroom curtain for my second bathroom that anyone can make. It still lets in lots of light.

Add a Small Rug

I’m not talking only about a bath mat, I mean a rug in the bathroom.  Depending on your comfort level, you may want a rug that is washable.  I like to put wool rugs even though you can’t “wash” them. They can be cleaned with a hand held steamer which I also use to clean up pet problems.

I found the first beauty on Overstock.com. It’s wool and it’s super affordable that even if the cat yaks on it I won’t be devastated. Here’s a similar rug on Amazon, also by Safavieh. It’s wool so it feels lush underfoot. I found the Moroccan rug on Rugsusa.com and the striped rug on Amazon.

Here’s the rug I ordered on Amazon for my second bathroom. It’s makes the room. It’s not wool, but I love it.

Hang a Fun Shower Curtain

Shower curtains have fallen out of favor compared to glass doors lately, but if you don’t have a budget for glass there are some beautiful curtains available.  These can add some much needed texture to your bathroom, and you can change them out without spending a lot if you get tired of the pattern.

Here are a few of my favorites, all from Target. The pink one is a bit of a splurge at $60, but the other two are under $20.

Add Small Plants

If you have no windows in your bathroom, you may need to use a fake plant. Even fake plants can add a bit of life to your bathroom. If you are going with fake/faux plants try Target or Pier 1 for small ones.

Nice Looking Necessities

The bathroom can be the home of some pretty unsightly items like plungers and toilet cleaners.   You may not want to see these, but there are some nice storage units that make it not quite so obvious what they are. They have their own little enclosure so you aren’t looking at the nasty rubber plunger.

There are inexpensive choices at Target and Amazon.
