Cute Bath Rugs
Do you need a new rug or bath mat? I’m always amazed at what a difference a rug can make in any room, even a bathroom.
I spilled bleach on my bathroom rug, so it’s time for a new one. Here are tips for getting the right rug for your bathroom and a few of my favorite rugs for bathrooms. This is the rug I bought last year for our bathroom that for less than $50.
What Size rug Should You Get?
The answer to this question depends on the size of your bathroom and how you use it. If you have a large bathroom, you might want more than one rug or mat. You can use one in front of the sink or vanity and one beside the shower.
When it comes to rugs bigger is almost always better. A large rug makes a room feel warmer. If a rug is too small it looks like an accident. Get the largest rug that will fit in the space you have. Always measure your space twice before you order, returning the wrong size is expensive.
You must decide if you are comfortable with a rug in front of the toilet. I don’t think I have to explain the details, but sometimes rugs in front of a toilet get dirty. If you are going to put a rug there, be sure to read about the best material for a bathroom rug.
What rug material works best in a bathroom?
For bathrooms I like to stick to cotton or polypropylene. Cotton rugs can be washed, which makes them well suited for bathrooms. One word of caution about cotton rugs, they do show stains. It can be hard to get makeup or food out of a cotton rug unless it’s white and bleach works. If you end up spilling something on the rug the best way to get the stain out is to soak it as quickly after the spill as possible.
It sounds weird to imagine a rug made of plastic, but polypropylene rugs are surprisingly soft. Polypropylene works well in a bathroom because you can literally hose it off. I don’t like to put wool in a bathroom because it’s expensive and not washable.
Cute rugs for a bathroom
I don’t think bathrooms are a good place to spend a lot of money on a rug. You can read this post about where you should spend money on a rug. All of these rugs are under $100.

Which Manufacturers Are best for Rugs
There are lots of manufacturers out there that make inexpensive rugs. My two favorites, which you can find on Amazon, Wayfair and Overstock are Safavieh and Nuloom. They have a reputation for quality and I’ve personally purchased rugs from both of them and been very happy.
Should Bathroom rugs have rubber backing?
Since bathrooms tend to have slippery floors, it’s a good idea to put a non-slip pad under a rug. Some rugs have a rubber backing, but these tend to be bath mats more than rugs. I prefer to have a rug in my bathroom that covers a larger portion of the floor than a bath mat does.
You can always put a small bath mat just outside the shower or tub if you want a little extra layer to absorb water. I do this is my son’s bathroom.
What pile height Works best?
Bathroom rugs tend to have a lot of things that wind up getting on them, and that’s why I don’t like a really thick rug. I like a pile height of 1/2 inch or less. Cotton rugs by default are usually very flat and thin. Most of the polypropylene rugs are thicker. The one in the photo above is slightly less than 1/2 inch thick.
It also works better to have a low pile rug because it’s harder to clean the hair out of a thick rug.
What’s the Best Way to Handle Hair
Bathroom collect more hair than other rugs because we brush and comb our hair in the bathroom. If you aren’t the kind of person that washes a rug regularly, be sure you get one that can be vacuumed. Cotton rugs are really difficult to vacuum. They bunch up and move around. They are best cleaned by shaking them out or washing them.
If your bathroom collects a lot of hair, think about your cleaning preference – vacuum vs. washing.
New washable rugs
If you have been on social media you know that Ruggable brand washable rugs are very popular. These rugs come with their own rug pad that supposedly holds them in place. You wash only the rug and not the pad.
I used the word supposedly because I haven’t purchased one myself. However, my sister bought one and didn’t like it. She said it was too thin and that it didn’t feel like the rugs she is used to. Based on this trusted source, I probably won’t buy one.
I just purchased Nuloom’s washable rug (pictured above) for my bathroom. I will add photos as soon as it arrives. What rugs do you like for a bathroom?
GREAT article Andrea!! I’m seriously rethinking my bathroom rug situation now! 🙂 Thanks for the tips and info! Happy Monday my friend!
