Transform Your Living Room
Do you want to transform your living room, but you don’t have a lot of money to do it? I’m going to give you four things in your living room that you can change, and none of them are the furniture or painting the walls.
And why does this even matter?
I’ve seen a million videos, as I know you have too, about transforming your home using a lot of power tools and paint. You don’t have to do that to make your space look completely different. You don’t even have to buy new furniture.
I’m going to tell you, there’s a caveat to this. For example, if your couch is a floral fabric or something that isn’t (what I would consider) pretty classic, this might not work.
I like to treat the large pieces of furniture in my living room, such as the couch and a few club chairs, as I would my wardrobe—like a capsule. These classic pieces can be mixed with anything. They might be more expensive and higher quality. But because of that, I can mix and match them with lots of different styles, and colors over my lifetime, and in different homes. The average person does not live where they are forever and moves to different homes. You want furniture that can work in different places.
4 Things To Transform Your Living Room
These four things you can change that will completely transform your living room. If you read to the end, I’m going to show you a living room done two ways, completely different. But, it is the same furniture.
#1 Rugs
One way to transform the living room is with the rug. Rugs don’t have to be expensive. They can help you set your style and color palette and are versatile. You can put them down over carpet, over cement, or in any space. They can transform the way that the living room looks.
#2 Window Coverings
The second thing to transform the living room is window coverings and drapes. These are a great way to add a lot of style, softness, and texture to your space. Plus, window coverings give you privacy if you want it.
#3 Lighting
Three is lighting. Think of lighting as the jewelry of your living room. Lighting is important and sometimes overlooked. Previously, I have given design tips on how every room needs three kinds of light. The living room is no different. If you don’t want to pay to have someone wire in a light fixture, there are a lot of plug-in fixtures that can hang from the ceiling. Also, there are some amazing floor lamps, table lamps, sconces, and lighting to go over pictures to consider. These lighting fixtures add a lot of mood to your living room.
#4 Accessories
The fourth tip to change up your living room is accessories. Keep in mind this is a big category. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that if your budget limits change to anything else, simply switching out your accessories can completely transform the look of your room.
You can change the color, style, and mood. I’ll tell you a secret: my mom used to decorate furnished apartments. These apartments had brown couches, brown carpet, and cream walls. They were about as plain vanilla as possible. She would go into the apartment with a boatload of accessories, and the space would look completely different. Consider decorating with these accessories: plants, baskets, throw pillows, blankets, and books. These items add a lot of character to your space.
Try changing these four things as I suggest above to transform your living room. Here’s an example below of a living room that looks mid-century modern in the first picture and looks more moody in the second picture. Even though nothing is changing except for these four things, the rooms look completely different. Try it out for yourself.
