IKEA chairs
This blog post is in response to an article I wrote on the best fall finds at IKEA. A reader commented asking if UPPLAND chairs are comfortable, and did I sit in one? Yes, I went back to test out the chair and sat in one.
After thinking about which chair I felt was the most comfortable, I decided to share with you all my favorite chairs at IKEA and rate them on a scale of 1 to 10 for comfort. For my comfort review, 10 is a chair that you could curl up in and watch a movie and 1 is a chair that you’re uncomfortable in under an hour.

8 IKEA Chairs Tested and Rated for Comfort
1. EKENÄSET Armchair
Let’s start with the EKENÄSET. The seat comes in oatmeal, green, and black leather. I think this chair is surprisingly comfortable. I would give it an eight, and it’s $249. You might say that sounds expensive. If you look for other mid-century modern chairs like this at some other well-known retailers, you’re going to find that that’s a bargain price.
2. DYVLINGE Swivel Chair
Next is DYVLINGE. I didn’t want to like this chair, but it is comfortable. I don’t know of any other swivel chairs that are in this price range. It’s kind of a small swivel chair, so it can be tucked into a lot of different spaces. It comes in a black corduroy or green. The thing I don’t like about it is the chrome base, but I feel like it would be easy to change.
Here is a link to an article I wrote for tips on how to spray paint anything.
3. ROCKSJÖN Armchair
Next is the ROCKSJÖN. I wanted to love this chair. It has a removable, washable cover. It comes in white, a gray stripe, and oatmeal. The price is $249. I give it a five on a scale of comfort because it has a really low back and the seat is really firm. If you have a place where you need a chair that you’re not going to sit in much, this chair is perfect for that scenario.
4. UPPLAND Armchair
Next is the UPPLAND. This chair is $479, and that is not cheap. It comes in a ton of colors. As many people mentioned in the comments, there are lots of custom cover makers. The one that seemed to be popular with most people was Bemz. I’ve linked their website, because they have some amazing covers. If you’re into getting a custom IKEA cover, I would definitely check out this company.
I like the blue UPPLAND chair. I will say if you want one of these chairs, good luck. There are two IKEAs within driving distance from me and only two of these chairs were in stock. I feel like these chairs are in demand. Even though they are not inexpensive, they are far less expensive than similar chairs.
5. PERSBOL Armchair
Next is PERSBOL. This chair doesn’t look like it’d be comfortable, but it is. It’s only $199. It comes in birch, black, and red. I really love the red. What I don’t like about this chair is the seat. I think you could cover the seat. Even if you’re not very good at sewing, you can make an envelope cover for any pillow that has no zipper enclosure and can be removed and washed.
6. EKERÖ Armchair
Next is EKERÖ. I don’t love this chair, but I like the size of it. It comes in four colors and it’s $259. This would not be my first chair choice. On a scale of 1 to 10, it was a seven.
7. HOLMSTA Armchair
Next is the HOLMSTA for $299. What I love about this chair is the way it looks. It is not that comfortable. I’m going to give it a five. If you have a room where you’re trying to style a beach vibe or a boho vibe, I think this is a cute chair for that look, and it’s $299. If you want more ideas for a Boho Living Room, see this link.
8. SJÄLSÖ Armchair
The last is the SJÄLSÖ. I think this chair would be super cute with a custom cover. It is not comfortable, so this is more of a sit-in-for-an-hour chair. If you have a spot that you need something like that, I would give it a rating of four. Let me know which is your favorite chair. If there’s one you’d like me to go rate, slip the name in the comments.
