Susan,

I agree it's hard not get sucked in, but it's gotten ridiculous. Good luck finding a tree.

Patty,

Thanks for the great suggestions. I love the 4 gift idea. I agree experiences are the key to family memories, not the gifts. Thanks for reading.

Thank you for this post! I, too, am so tired of Christmas in October….even earlier in craft stores. When I finally get around to actually shopping everything is gone… even the stuff to DIY! And this year…. all the clothes are Christmas or red or green. Especially pajamas! AND the Black Friday sales for months It causes major anxiety and takes the joy and fun and traditions out of it. Hope I can find a tree this year!

Yes, a thousand times yes!! I love Christmas as much as anyone, but also love fall and Thanksgiving! I love my fall decorations and the togetherness of the Thanksgiving holiday. A few years ago, our family started a black Friday semi-tradition: we find something outdoors or active to do that does *not* involve shopping. We've done hikes a few times, a nature scavenger hunt (several of us live on acreage, so we have the room for the kids to run around finding things on the list), etc. It makes fun memories! A few years ago, my husband and I quit exchanging gifts years ago too. It is such a relief to just relax and enjoy each other during the season. With regards to simplifying gifts, several years ago my niece shared something she'd seen online: their kids got 4 gifts: something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read. They took the money they saved and put it towards other family activities throughout the year to make memories with their kids. I thought that was a brilliant idea! Thanks for sharing your thoughts here and letting me share my thoughts in agreement :-) Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

Every year the pressure over Christmas grows. Spend, spend, spend. Earlier and earlier and this year is the worst! (I say that every year!) By the time Christmas arrives I need a vacation. The "black friday" specials are great but it's become oppressive. Why not go back to December sales? And Thanksgiving? Except for providing an enormous feast on an extravagant table the holiday is practically overlooked! It's all unnecessary. Spend time with family, enjoy a meal together, give thanks and relax. The mania that has become Christmas will start soon enough!

Andrea, I am with YOU!! I do not decorate until after Thanksgiving. I avoid Christmas creep, even being a blogger. I would like to share this post on Saturday Meanderings this week. Such a good message and the holidays should be celebrated for their true meaning. Thanks for being so candid and honest about this.

It's great that you are being real about how you feel about the holidays! I'm still posting about Thanksgiving and cannot believe that there is so much about Christmas so soon. Unfortuatnely with the internet explosion it's not just in the stores but it's all over the internet too. I say just do you! I'm all about Thanksgiving so far and starting my Christmas diy's next week. Hope your well.
